Ketogenic Diet For Cancer Treatment

Even though there have been amazing advances in modern healthcare, chronic disease continues to plague this world. Maybe we have to say that technological leaps in drugs, genetic therapy and surgery are not the answer. Perhaps we should seek the solution to cancer and chronic disease in regulating the metabolic functions within our bodies.

In most Western cultures today, diets rich in grains, sugar, and starch would be unrecognizable to our recent ancestors. Sugar was virtually unknown until a couple of centuries ago, yet research shows that it is sugar that actually feeds cancer, it is the main source of fuel that feeds cancer and leads to an inflammatory environment. Sugar is now seen as a crucial risk factor in increasing the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

It is often enlightening and educational to look at cultures surviving in harsh conditions to learn how they manage. Both the Eskimo and the Masai are famed for their minimal consumption of carbohydrates. In fact, by adopting a low carb diet, it switched their metabolisms to burning fat for energy in place of sugar or glucose, this creates the metabolic state now known as ketosis, where the body burns ketones to produce energy rather than sugar or carbohydrates.

When the body lacks glucose as its primary source of energy, ketones are metabolized by fatty acids in the liver as an alternative energy source, ketosis is a beneficial process that the human body developed as an adaption when food is scarce, such as for the above-mentioned hunter-gatherers. You can produce ketones by limiting carbs in your diet to less than 80 grams daily. As the body adapts to ketones as an energy source the production metabolism becomes more and more efficient, helping to burn fat quickly.

The Ketogenic Diet and Cancer

There are other advantages to the ketogenic diet that may be more important than efficient fat burning,  reducing carbohydrates will lower the levels of glucose in the bloodstream, glucose,  the fuel that cancer cells feed on. Putting your body into ketosis will aid in starving cancer cells of their energy supply.

Foremost cell biologist Otto Warburg discovered that cancer cells are incapable of flourishing using energy from cellular respiration, but uses glucose fermentation. Further research by Dr. Thomas Seyfried and other cancer experts, found that cancer cells are also fueled by fermented amino acid glutamine.

Cancer cells have ten times more insulin receptors on their surfaces than normal cells, enabling them to feast on glucose and nutrients coming through the bloodstream at a very high rate, so as you continue consuming glucose as a main source of energy, cancer cells will flourish and spread. Cancer patients with high blood sugar levels are least likely to survive.

To summarise, due to damaged mitochondria in cancer cells they are unable to create energy from aerobic respiration, and they cannot metabolize fatty acids either. So by restricting glucose and amino acids, we are able to stave off cancer.

Intermittent Fasting and Cancer

By combining the ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting we can optimize ketone production and starve cancer cells more effectively. Late-stage cancer patients completing lemon water cleanse for three to seven days can weaken the cancer cells further.

Constantly snacking and eating up to five times a day means that nutrition is keeping blood sugar and insulin levels elevated, so the fuel source needed for cancer cells remains a constant threat.

Intermittent fasting for a period of 4-8 hours in a day allows the body to produce ketones as fuel for the entire body. The 20-hour fast may be optimal for cancer patients, but for others, 16 to 18-hour fasting may prove to be more compatible with their lifestyle.

Ketogenic Diet For Cancer

The ketogenic diet is centered on healthy fats. These include:

  • Avocados
  • Coconut oil
  • Raw seeds and nuts
  • Olive oil

The diet allows carb vegetables

  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Celery
  • Collard greens
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Kale

Protein sources come from:

  • Chickpeas and Most Varieties of Beans
  • Nutritional Yeast
  • Hempseed
  • Hempseed
  • Spirulina
  • Amaranth and Quinoa

The body needs to be in an alkaline state in order to weaken cancer cells, we recommend organic acids, antioxidants and enzymes, when organic acids metabolize, foods like dried herbs lemon, lime, and apple cider vinegar as well as low-sugar fermented drinks help to weaken cancer cells and increase cellular oxygenation.

High protein diets can also feed cancer, so moderate protein intake is highly recommended in order to weaken cancer cells, the healthy ketogenic diet ratio is healthy fats 75%, just 20% protein and not exceeding 5% carbohydrates.

Hormone Sensitivity with a Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet allows each person to feel satiated due to optimal insulin and leptin sensitivity. As an example, a man weighing 150 pounds should consume 30-50g/day of carbohydrates and less than 70g/day of protein to maintain an optimal state of ketosis. When only a single meal or two is consumed consisting of approved ketogenic foods, this is easy. The ideal blood sugar concentration for weakening cancer cells is between 60-70mg/dl, and ketone levels are recommended between 4-7mM.

While practicing the ketogenic diet, it is also recommended to supplement with high quality (non-synthetic) multivitamins, probiotics, and omega-3s. Omega-3 supplementation has been found advantageous in stimulating the anti-cancer effects of the ketogenic diet.
