Curcumin For Cancer Treatment And Healing

Curcumin For Cancer Treatment

Curcumin used for cancer treatment and what you need to know.

Also sometimes known as Indian saffron, turmeric is the main spice in curry and is also used to add color and flavor to mustards, cheeses, and even butter. Turmeric contains a bright yellow chemical known as curcumin. Curcumin has shown to be very effective in treating cancer in many published studies.

Do you know the spice turmeric?

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. Turmeric and curcumin are associated with many scientifically-backed health benefits. These include but are not limited to; managing osteoarthritis and diabetes symptoms, regulating body fat, reducing ‘bad’ cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease, supporting antifungal medication and preventing the growth of bacteria that can trigger health issues.

When isolated, curcumin is also a powerful phytochemical. One noted curcumin benefit is its powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can even “match the effectiveness” of some drugs, minus the side effects. It “fights inflammation” at a molecular level by blocking the molecule that stimulates inflammation in cells.

This is crucial because, while “acute, short-term inflammation” helps the body fight pathogens and repair damage, “chronic, low-level inflammation” is perilous to one’s health. This kind of inflammation is linked to the development of chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, asthma, arthritis, heart diseases, obesity, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, among other debilitating diseases.

In fact, a study found that curcumin was “better at minimizing diabetes markers than turmeric.” What about curcumin for cancer treatment? And why is intravenous administration most ideal for cancer therapy?

Curcumin helps remove abnormal cells from the body by regulating apoptotic proteins responsible for apoptosis or programmed cell death. In this way, it prevents abnormal cells from replicating and growing.

Intravenous Curcumin Works Best When Treating Cancer

Another study found that curcumin, with isoflavones, can suppress prostate-specific antigen (PSA) production among men at risk of prostate cancer. Refer www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3535097/. The latter is monitored by assessing a person’s PSA levels; an elevated PSA level indicates a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. The results of the study showed that “isoflavones and curcumin could modulate serum PSA levels.”

While orally ingesting curcumin can be effective for reducing inflammation and tapping into its other health benefits, it does not maximize its healing potential because curcumin is not readily absorbed by the body. Intravenous delivery accelerates broader distribution throughout the body due to curcumin being fat-soluble.

When delivered as curcumin IV, and directly on a tumor in the case of cancer patients, studies have shown that residual levels can linger for up to 30 days. This increases the possibility of tumor growth inhibition and apoptosis.

As an anti-inflammatory agent, it can help slow down cancer growth. Other noted benefits of curcumin for cancer treatment include:

  • Protecting the body from toxins that support cancer cell growth, thus slowing down and inhibiting cancer progression;
  • Helping protect the liver from damage as a result of medications;
  • Boosts the natural production of “master antioxidant” glutathione; and
  • Inhibiting angiogenesis (development of new blood vessels) which cuts off blood supply and starves cancer cells.
